Who we are

Engineering Effectiveness builds tools that let Twitter engineers iterate quickly at scale. Our team in San Francisco is optimizing git to handle the source control at higher scale, lower latency and within a mono-repo of all of @TwitterEng. This will let developers at Twitter (and because we're committed to open source, the world) to focus on developing code, not waiting or worrying about source control management.

What You'll Do

  • Design interfaces that will simplify life for developer tools

  • Code (we use a mix of C/C++, Python, Java, Scala)

  • Ship and maintain our system for our customers

  • Use the right algorithms and data structures to improve our system

  • Follow software best practices: testing, code reviews, documentation, communication

  • Work with upstream open source communities

Who You Are

We're looking for a software engineer who wants to ship simple systems. You like incorporating insights from a broad mix of areas. You're committed to growing your craft and becoming a better engineer.  You want to make software faster. You empathize with your users and want to solve their problems.

We work across different areas. It would be a plus if you have experience in any of them:

  • open source

  • distributed systems (especially databases)

  • developer tools (git, Mercurial, Perforce, Ant, Maven, Gradle, Bazel, Buck, Jenkins, Travis, etc.)

  • Unix filesystems and syscalls

  • Running production systems and debugging them.


  • Native code development (C/C++)

  • BA/BS in Computer Science or equivalent

Engineering Hiring Process

Step 1

Once your application is received, a recruiter will reach out pending your qualifications are a match for the role.

Step 2

If your background is a match, you may have 1-2 technical phone interviews or be given the chance to provide a work sample depending on the role.

Step 3

If the phone interviews go well or your work sample is strong, the final step includes interviews with 5-6 people held onsite in our office.
