Engineering Manager, Core Data Libraries (Data Platform)
Who We Are:
Twitter’s globally distributed, real-time communications network generates trillions of events and petabytes of data per day. The mission of the Data Platform team is to build the fastest, most reliable, and largest-scale data processing technologies in the world - able to cope with ever-increasing volumes of data in real time, and then apply them to the company’s most critical and fundamental data problems.
What You’ll Do:
As a manager of the Core Data Libraries team in Data Platform, you will manage a team building libraries to process hundreds of petabytes of data and tens of millions of events per second in real time. The libraries your team builds will integrate directly with Twitter’s products, opening the door to new and cutting-edge features. You will work with open-source technologies such as Hadoop, Scalding, Heron, and Presto and be an active member of the open-source community. You will empower dozens of engineering teams, hundreds of co-workers, and millions of users to dream of new insights and new possibilities.
A successful engineering manager will:
Be responsible for the group’s technical strategy and roadmap – creating success metrics in close collaboration with internal customers.
Work with tech leads and senior engineers to gather system requirements, review new feature proposals and large system improvements.
Mentor the professional development of each direct report through personal and performance management.
Give engineers the tools, confidence, and motivation to make decisions independently that lead to the recognition of your engineers and not just yourself.
Be an aggressive source of engineering talent and be comfortable closing candidates.
Bring a strong perspective that drives change and motivates engineers to develop simple solutions to complex problems.
BA/BS or higher in Computer Science (or equivalent work experience).
Technical capacity to partner with tech leads and be comfortable diving into the fray to help drive resolution of incidents or technical disagreements.
Prior experience in the big data space, ideally as an individual contributor working on open source technologies such as Hadoop, Scalding, Spark, Pig, or Storm.
Previously managed a team of 4-8 engineers with a responsibility for building big data systems.
