The Position


  • Work closely with Software Engineering (SWE) counterparts and take an active role as a co-owner of production services to ensure services are built, maintained, and operated in a reliable and scalable way – You will be part of the successful delivery of new features and services, as well as the day-to-day successful operation of existing services;
  • Deep involvement with application services throughout the Software Development Lifecycle, serving as the local SRE domain specialist and point of contact – Through this involvement you will gain a deep understanding of the technology stack, and be empowered to meaningfully contribute to design documents, code reviews, and other technical discussions;
  • Collaborate with the software engineering teams to drive operational health improvements, root cause analysis, post-mortem discussions and their associated remediations that serve to improve reliability and sublinearly scale operations;
  • Partner with other engineers to use tools, processes, and techniques to sublinearly scale operations and reduce business risk, in areas that include: Infrastructure & configuration management, deploys, capacity modeling & planning, and incident mitigation;
  • Identify common patterns in challenges with operating services in production, collaborate with other SRE teams to design and implement reusable solutions and/or other multi-functional work that drives down the complexity, difficulty, costs, and risks of operating the business;
  • Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation.


Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of software engineering experience;
  • Experience managing services in a distributed, internet-scale *nix environment;
  • Development experience in Python, Scala, Java, C, or C++;
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Linux operating system internals and TCP/IP and HTTP;
  • Must be able to work extended hours and weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with systems programming (bash and shell tools);
  • Experience using containerization software such as Kubernetes, Docker, Mesos;
  • Familiarity with systems management tools (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, etc.);
  • Comfortable working with on-prem and cloud-based infrastructure (AWS, GCP) in terms of deployment, support, monitoring, administration, and troubleshooting;
  • Proven understanding of systems and application design, including the operational trade-offs of various designs;
  • Experience with Kubeflow, Scatter-gather systems, and offline systems like Hadoop is a plus, but not a requirement.

The expected salary range for this role to be performed in San Francisco is USD $142,000 - USD $200,000. Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands. This range may be modified in the future.

This job is also eligible for participation in Twitter’s Equity Incentive Plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies.
