The Position

Who We Are:

Big data, Data Analytics, and Machine Learning are extensively used across Twitter to build user experiences ranging from onboarding users to serving their timeline to everything in between. Cortex, the central ML org at Twitter, is focused on advancing big data and machine learning inside and outside Twitter. 


Twitter Cortex’s mission is to accelerate the product impact of Data and Machine Learning at Twitter through research in advanced and responsible Machine Learning and by providing foundational models, solutions, an intuitive platform and scalable data pipelines. We are a passionate group of ML practitioners, Data Scientists, engineers, researchers, PMs, TPMs and S&O folks at Twitter that are deeply passionate about advancing machine learning responsibly in order to serve the public conversation. We represent a diverse array of skill sets, backgrounds, and areas of focus which we deploy in partnership with Twitter’s product teams by creating innovative platforms, approaches and insights using machine learning.


We are experiencing a period of rapid advancement in the field of big data and machine learning both in academia and in industry. Our role is to ensure that big data and machine learning in Twitter benefits from, and contributes to, these advancements. We share the latest knowledge and best practices with product teams from across the company. We actively publish our work, participate in ML events and conferences and partner with other research institutions and academic labs.


What You’ll Do:

You will lead a group of ML practitioners, data scientists, engineers, researchers, PMs,  and TPMs to develop state-of-the-art big data and machine learning technologies that empower the product developments in Twitter. We're looking for a senior leader who can collaborate with our internal and external partners. 

  • Mentor the professional development of direct reports, managers and senior ICs, through personal and performance management. Build diverse and distributed teams and collaborative environments.

  • Build strong relationships with the product teams, research institutions and academic labs and deeply understand & partner with them. 

  • Lead the vision and mission for Cortex and for all of Twitter to advance the state-of-the-art big data and machine learning at Twitter and unlock business impact. 

  • Attract and retain the best talents in big data and machine learning to make Cortex successful in its established mission.


Who You are:

You have experience with leading R&D orgs with a responsibility for making business impact and driving innovation. 

  • You have good understanding and hands on experience in big data and machine learning.

  • You have a passion for taking a customer-driven approach to doing high-quality research. You take pride in driving business impact.

  • You are skilled at coaching and guiding your directs through their career development. 

  • You’re capable of communicating & collaborating with our business, product, engineering, design and research colleagues to discover new opportunities that benefit Twitter.



  • Ability to work collaboratively across a large engineering organization, both in terms of scale & in terms of mission complexity. 

  • Experience building an inclusive engineering culture, with teams that are eager to learn and deeply curious.  You will be unifying several disparate engineering groups under one leader, so the expectation is that you can create a world-class platform organization that is able to attract, mentor and retain outstanding engineering talent.  

  • Willingness to contribute to the overall technical vision at Twitter and act as a key stakeholder at the senior executive level. 

  • Instill a customer focused mindset to the engineering organization. Making sure technical priorities are aligned to the various product development groups that will build new products on the platform. 

  • Recognized as a visionary and outstanding software engineer with own-name technical achievements. 

  • Has experience working on the back end software stack.  

  • Strong execution focus. 

  • Recruited/built one of the industry's most outstanding engineering groups. Familiar with engineering “best practices” and tools that work well for large, diverse groups.
