The Position

Who We Are

The Privacy and Data Protection External Counsel team is a team of privacy attorneys who are subject matter experts and legal advisors responsible for engaging with external privacy stakeholders and partnering closely with other parts of the PDP team, supporting our legal and business colleagues on privacy matters. We are dedicated to supporting our vision to protect public conversations and foster customer trust in Twitter by fulfilling our mission to bring a customer first lens to Twitter's data and privacy decisions to meet our promises to customers and regulators.

What You'll Do

  • You will be part of the external activities privacy team, who is responsible for external engagement, coordinating investigations and tracking new regulations

  • Responding to inquiries, complaints and investigations from privacy regulators, consumers, non-profit, non-governmental or civil society groups

  • Managing relationships with external privacy stakeholders

  • Tracking privacy laws and regulations and maintaining a current framework/tracker of laws and obligations applicable to Twitter and Twitter's compliance posture.

  • Work collaboratively with the PDP team to help analyze and communicate the implications of changing privacy laws and regulations to your clients and peers.

  • Feeding regulatory updates and analysis and related information to the PDP team and business stakeholders as well as supporting policy teams' engagement and analysis of developing privacy laws and regulations.

  • Managing escalations from consumers/members of the public

  • Provide legal advice to ensure your client's activities and operations are compliant with applicable laws, regulations, standards/controls, contractual obligations, and industry best practices.

  • Act as one of the main points of contact for the PDP team on incidents involving potential data disclosure. Collaborate with the Security and Experience Teams on incident preparedness, investigation, communication, and remediation.

  • Create and provide guides and training to legal team members, clients, and cross-functional stakeholders on areas within your remit to ensure we have a consistent and clear position on applicable laws, regulations, and relevant self-regulatory frameworks.

  • Educate and advocate for privacy and data protection in cross-functional forums.

  • Participate as a member of the PDP in the ongoing work of building, refining, and scaling privacy and data protection compliance processes and work as part of a cross-functional privacy team to deliver best in class privacy and data protection training initiatives across the company.

  • Support and manage various one-off projects.

Who You Are

You are an experienced privacy and data protection attorney who is eager to work as a specialist focused on a variety of privacy and data protection topics.

  • You are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with broad responsibilities. While legal expertise is expected we need someone with a keen business sense, a strong work ethic, and practiced interpersonal discipline.

  • You have the ability to operate independently, proactively, and cross-functionally with teams across the organization.

  • You are a self-starter who works well with minimal supervision, but shows excellent judgment about when to look to managers and teammates for guidance, and when and how to communicate with diverse stakeholders.

  • You are a team player with a proven track record of building cross-functional relationships.

  • You have a demonstrated ability to complete several simultaneous projects on a deadline.

  • You are detail-oriented with excellent writing skills and you love to get things done!

  • 8+ years of legal experience supporting and advising businesses on global privacy and data protection related concerns, ideally with both a law firm and/or within a fast-paced technology, media, advertising agency, public entity or Internet company.

  • Proven experience demonstrative of your ability to be solution-oriented, able to calibrate risk, and focused on customer-service.

  • Proven track record showing exceptional communication and project management skills.

  • Ability to liaise with and work with regulators and policy makers.

  • Have a well-developed ability and passion for making complex topics understandable for various audiences.

  • Experience working in or building, privacy and data protection programs and developing compliance processes, practices and related documentation.

  • Knowledge of global privacy laws, regulations, standards and related regimes including but not limited to CCPA, GDPR, and LGPD.

  • Experience working on privacy and data protection incidents, investigations and inquiries from regulators, data protection authorities and other public entities

  • Ability and strong desire to effectively advise, develop relationships, and work collaboratively across stakeholders both within and outside of the legal and privacy teams.

  • Experience leading with a growth mindset and comfort working in a company experiencing rapid change and evolution.

  • Bar admission in good standing to practice law in a US state jurisdiction.

  • Advising or working on privacy and data protection issues with respect to data governance, comprehensive, global, privacy compliance programs, risk management, advertising and advertising technology and human resources preferred.

  • CIPP certification not required but preferred.

  • Language skills are not required but a big plus.

  • History handling privacy incidents through investigation, fixes, and resolution.

  • Experience in human-centric threat modeling, data anonymization, and/or other privacy-preserving techniques, process, or technologies.

  • Experience in code review in one or more general purpose languages.

  • Experience with developing or debugging microservice architectures or distributed systems.

The applicable salary range for each U.S.-based role is based on where the employee works and is aligned to one of 4 tiers according to a cost of labor index in that geographic area. Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands. The expected salary ranges for this role, are set forth below. These ranges may be modified in the future.

  • Tier A: USD $212,000 - USD $297,000
  • Tier B: USD $202,000 - USD $282,000
  • Tier C: USD $191,000 - USD $267,000
  • Tier D: USD $179,000 - USD $253,000
