Sr. Staff Software Engineer - Experimentation Platform

The Position

As a senior staff software engineer on the PIE team, you will be a leader in setting the direction and vision of experimentation and causal inference at Twitter.  You'll work directly with numerous teams across the company to improve Twitter’s rate of innovation by helping them effectively leverage experimentation techniques.

What you’ll be doing: 

  • Work across teams and functions to design and architect software at the cutting edge of experimentation and inference.  Understand our customer’s problems, and balance their needs against methodological rigor to help move Twitter forward.

  • Work with leadership to establish direction for experimentation and inference at Twitter, by setting long-term vision, defining strategy, and communicating to stakeholders.

  • As a senior staff level engineer, you will multiply the effectiveness of the team by mentoring both new and experienced engineers, providing code and design reviews, setting the bar for quality high, and focusing the team’s execution on high-impact projects.

  • Participate in all phases of software development from architecture/design through implementation, testing, code reviews and on-call.

  • Work closely with the Experimentation Data Science team to implement sophisticated statistical methodology into the platform.

  • Drive “Experimentation Culture” at Twitter. Be a part of leveling up experimentation and causal inference culture at Twitter.


What it takes: 

  • 10+ years in a hands-on engineering role, writing and shipping high quality production code, especially highly reliable and scalable distributed systems.

  • Experience with experimentation and causal inference at scale, either through direct work on or as a power user of an internet scale experimentation platform.

  • You have a track record of multiplying the impact and effectiveness of your team beyond your own individual efforts.

  • Experience with at least one of the following languages: Scala, Java, and/or any JVM based language.

  • Experience debugging in a data-heavy environment (e.g. Hadoop, Spark).

  • Able to effectively communicate technical ideas to and collaborate with both technical and non-technical peers.

  • Bonus Points: Experience with stream processing at scale (e.g. Beam/Flink/Storm) OR GCP and related tools.
