Staff Engineer - Backend, Global Participation

The Position

Who We Are:

Global Participation engineering team is focused on Twitter’s topmost priority of growing active users globally; especially in emerging/developing economies such as India and Africa. Our goal is to find new users as well as make existing users engage more actively on a daily basis in these regions. We are building a foundational team in Bangalore where we expect to have a cross functional group of product managers, engineers, researchers, designers, operations and data scientists, work as a single unit, obsessing about user needs in these regions. We are looking to experiment heavily and iterate fast - if you like making an impact on a product that is used by hundreds of millions of users, with full ownership, this is the team for you! 

What You'll Do:

  • We are looking for foundational backend engineers to bootstrap the global participation engineering team; engineers who can work on all layers of the Twitter stack  including micro services, networking stack and the core infrastructure under the hood to deliver product features that drive new user adoption as well as ensure retention for existing Twitter users. 

  • Work with all cross functional stakeholders including researchers, designers, data scientists, product managers, and engineers to understand and define product requirements and roadmaps

  • Technically lead one or more teams to deliver features that help grow Twitter’s international user base and activity.

  • Lead by example in terms of best engineering practices including writing maintainable and extensible code with high quality tests and documentation.

  • Ability to iterate and experiment consistently while shipping high quality product features with an eye on quality, reliability and engineering excellence.

  • Be the recruiting champion and exemplary site citizen for Twitter globally as well as lead the upcoming growth of Twitter’s Bangalore site.

Who You Are:

  • You’re an experienced backend engineer who excels at user-centric product development and has a passion for building distributed systems at scale. 
  • You care deeply about engineering excellence and performance. 
  • You're experienced with the tools of the trade, you're comfortable digging into the nitty-gritty, and you’re eager to have an impact at a global scale.
  • You have prior leadership experience as a tech lead/architect with successful delivery of multiple products across your career.


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering, or other technical disciplines with 10+ years of industry experience

  • Experience in building and operating distributed backend systems in Python, Java, or Scala 

  • Strong design and architecture skills.

  • Strong computer science fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures background

  • Model of software engineering best practices, including agile development, unit testing, code reviews, design documentation, debugging, and troubleshooting

  • Prior leadership experience as technical lead/architect is a must-have.
