Engineering Manager, Media Platform

Seattle, WA

Who We Are

We are looking for an engineering manager to lead the Media Platform team at Twitter. Media is at the core of Twitter’s present, with images and video making up a large portion of tweets, and video ad products accounting for the largest and fastest growing portion of Twitter’s overall revenue, and central to its future. The Media Platform team owns backend services that handle ingestion, transcoding and delivery for images, gifs, and on-demand videos for 100’s of millions of users. The team’s services also handle lifecycle management, metadata storage, and coordination of information extraction tasks for media assets. Some of these services deal with massive scale, with some handling millions of transactions per second.

This is a diverse team geographically (three cities), experience-wise (~1 year to 15+ years), and skills-wise (distributed systems generalists and codec experts).

What You’ll Do

You will be managing a team of 10-12 software engineers as well as working closely with a QA engineer and a site reliability engineer. You will oversee coaching, career development, and performance management for all your direct reports. You will work with product management to define a roadmap for the team, do quarterly planning, set and track quarterly goals for the team. You will represent the team in various contexts to the rest of the organization and the company. You will guide the team and encourage a growth mindset as it continues to evolve its culture and tweak its processes.

Who You Are

An engineer at heart that has intentionally transitioned to people management and is looking for a new challenge. The ideal candidate is looking for an engineering management position that provides challenges around keeping a distributed team healthy and happy, managing a complex set of stakeholders, maintaining a large portfolio of services with a relatively small team, and hitting a fine balance between investing in infrastructure and foundation and new features.

If this sounds like you, you probably:

  • Are a strong believer in servant leadership, and are there first and foremost to bring the best out of other people
  • Are an engineer at your core, and have technical depth that lets you understand and earn the respect of world-class engineers
  • Have a track record of leading and managing engineering teams that are highly cohesive, have low attrition, and rate themselves as very healthy
  • Thrive on leveraging data to make decisions, but can rely on intuition when obtaining data is not feasible
  • Are relentless on prioritization, comfortable with pushing back, and able to juggle responsibilities and wear different hats throughout the day.
  • Excel at communication, and can explain complex technical issues accurately to technical and non-technical audiences

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering as an individual contributor and/or people manager
  • 3+ years of people management experience
  • Travel at least 4 times a year (quarterly)
